Dude, that night was crazy. You found out you were getting a second interview, and we went out and got smashed on 4-Dot, Gaggler, Hippieflip and Roca before embarking on a Parachute Down. Good thing they won’t be drug testing you.
Oh wait, they will? Well, I heard on this one blog that all you need to do is down a gallon of cranberry juice and you’ll be fine. I heard it on a blog so it must be true.
Drug testing is still a common practice in many of the world’s leading companies, and several of the world’s worst. Drug testing is everywhere. When you apply for a job, you may be subjected to a drug test. Over the next few posts, we will take an introductory look about drug testing and how it affects you, the job applicant.
Why Drug Testing?
Drugs are called drugs for a reason. They have an effect on your body that causes you to act and feel differently than you would without them. Yet if you are not high during work, why do employers care what you do in your free time? Why do drugs matter?
Some drugs, like Heroin, are extremely addictive. Someone that does heroin recreationally is not going to be doing it recreationally for long. Eventually the need will be too strong and they will be high during work hours.
Other drugs, like Ecstasy, do not always have long term effects (at least not the type that will affect your work). Yet these drugs can indicate an unruly lifestyle and have some serious dangers that could impact work (for example, taking ecstasy laced with a dangerous chemical).
Finally, some drugs, like marijuana, are relatively innocuous when only used on rare occasions. Yet although they may not have much of an effect if you do them recreationally, the company doesn’t know that you do it recreationally. All they know is that you do it, and it is in their best interests not to take a risk on you if they have another qualified applicant that shows up clean.
Drug testing is the law for some jobs as well. Anyone that works for the government or receives grants must be drug free, or else they lose their grant.
In the next post, we will look at drug test legality, how tests are conducted, and provide additional information on drug testing for job applicants.
