Some companies are simply better places to work than others. Companies like AirBnB, LinkedIn, and Google consistently rate in the Top 10 list of companies in terms of employee satisfaction, and there are many smaller companies and startups that have developed excellent reputations for being great employers that are simply too small to be represented on this type of list.
But these companies are not always hiring. So how do you get an interview with a company that doesn’t currently have any open positions?
Tips for Getting An Interview:
Even though there is no position open, nothing stops you from sending in a resume. If you genuinely believe you will be an asset to their team, create your best possible resume and a strong cover letter and send it in. Include any work samples (if any) and make sure that you are sending in an application that will impress even the most seasoned of managers.
Get Added to the Database
Many of these larger companies receive resumes all the time. It may be in your best interests to find the contact information for HR staff, and see if you can be added to the applicant tracking database. Many companies use this database first before they open up the job, searching those that have already applied. However, if you are going to apply to be added to a database, you have to also make sure that you also use great keywords in your resume so that you can be found via search.
Phone a Friend
Often the reason someone wants to work for a company is because they know someone that says great things about it. Now is a great time to look through your network, especially LinkedIn, and see if there are connections of yours that work for the company and could put in a good word for you.
It takes a lot of work to get someone an interview when a job isn’t open yet, so make sure you recognize that you’re asking for a big favor. The individual has to vouch for you as well, so treat them with the utmost professionalism. You should be seeking more than a paycheck – you should be looking for a place to do your absolute best. This will tell the employee that you are a good recommendation to make.
Building Your Presence
It is certainly difficult to get a job that isn’t yet available. But as you can see from stories about people like Nina, with some hard work and smart decisions you can make almost any work dream possible.
