You already know that employers will search for you online and that you need to actively clean up your online profile. What you may not know is that EVERYTHING they find can affect their decisions, including something like your Pinterest account. Think about what your account can tell employers. Something as simple as a Pinterest board full of places to see in the world can be interpreted as ….she is restless to go travel and won’t stay committed to us too long.
While you are looking for a job, you should really consider doing the following:
- Delete Your Name and Photo
First, make sure that your name and photo are hidden from Pinterest. If someone does find you on Pinterest, you want to make sure that they have no reason to believe that the Pinterest account they find is yours. Delete your name, use an ambiguous photo, and make sure that you can’t be identified.
If you really don’t want to remove your identity then you should definitely do all of the following:
- Remove the Naughty’s
If you have anything inappropriate on your Pinterest, make sure it’s taken off. This includes jokes, bad words, pictures of sexy people – anything that’s crossing a line that you wouldn’t share in a work environment should be removed.
- Hide the Personals
Similarly, try to avoid foreshadowing anything with your accounts. For example, posting photos of your ideal baby room – probably not a good idea. Photos of inspiration for your wedding? That might not be that great either. These foreshadow something that may take you away from work, and give an employer hesitation in hiring you.
- Quality Pins
You should also make sure that what you pin is a caliber that would “explain” to an employer why you pinned it. For example, a grainy photo of a car isn’t easy to defend. But a high quality photo of an aspirational or rare model car is fine.
- Capitalize Categories
It sounds very minor, but you should also make sure that your categories are capitalized. For example “Home” instead of “home” and “Pretty Photos” instead of “pretty photos.” Title caps are more professional. Also, consider renaming any category that isn’t professional. From “Pretty” to “Quality Photos.” Show that even in your personal life you are organized and specific.
Look at who you’re following as well and decide if they represent you. Most of the time they will – they’ll be friends, relatives, what have you. But every once in a while you may find someone that isn’t representative of who you are, like an individual with a lot of photos of extreme views. It may be best to remove them. You can also consider following those related to your industry, if possible.
Deletion is Best – But Cleaning is Second Best
The best way to keep your personal Pinterest away from unwanted eyes is to delete it, and you should consider it – especially if you are not very active on Pinterest. If all you need it for is to search for things, consider creating a new account under a fake name and fake email and simply using the search feature. But if you absolutely need your Pinterest accounts, clean it up before applying for jobs using the above tips.
