Recently at the Harvard Business Review, David Silverman wrote an article about how to ace the interview. In it he raises some good basic points, however it is important that we address of a few of those points below.
Thoughts and Commentary
- “Shut Up”
Silverman suggests to the reader that you need to stop talking during your job interview. He is partially right. You do need to refrain from rambling. Your answers should be to the point, and every word that comes out of your mouth should matter. However, be aware that this does not mean that you should answer in short, single sentences. Employers want people that are personable and engaging, and this is going to require that you supply longer answers. Don’t ramble, but don’t act like every question is a Yes/No. You need to talk, just make sure that everything you say matters.
- “Answer the Questions You Wish They’d Asked”
This is useful advice. We advocate that you should map out your answers beforehand. Try to integrate your best features into these answers. Sometimes it is just as useful to map out answers without associating them with a question in order to train yourself to place them in any question that you may answer. However, don’t forget you can also put anything you forget in the thank you letter.
The information here is a little scarce. Listening is important for an endless number of reasons that perhaps we will explore in a future article. However he does bring up a very interesting point – don’t interrupt your interviewer, because you do not know what they are going to ask.
Overall, not a bad article by David Silverman. A little basic, but certainly useful for job applicants with a few tips that don’t get mentioned often enough.
